What Counts as Retaliation Under California Law?
California has some of the strongest employee protection laws in the country. If you engaged in any legally protected activity — like reporting harassment, filing a wage claim, requesting medical leave, or refusing to do something illegal — your employer cannot punish you for it. Period.
Retaliation doesn't require proof that your complaint was "correct." It only requires that you had a reasonable, good-faith belief that something unlawful was happening.
The timing matters. If adverse action happened shortly after your protected activity, that pattern alone can be powerful evidence. Courts know that employers rarely admit to retaliating — the facts tell the story.
